Many people jump into their remodeling project without any forethought whatsoever. They expect their contractor to know just what to do. This might possibly work, but it is highly unlikely.

Ask yourself some simple questions:

1. What is your budget? There is a big difference between a $15k kitchen remodeling job, and one for $75k.

2. Do you entertain a lot? If you do, you will need more counter space, a larger refrigerator, stove, storage, and sink...not to mention a larger kitchen.

3. Do you have enough space in your existing kitchen? You might want to amalgamate your family room or some other adjoining space into your new kitchen. This will mean more tearing out and rebuilding of walls, etc.

4. Are aesthetics and quality important to you? There is a big difference between a Formica counter top and one of granite. There is also a big cost difference. Better quality usually translates into higher costs, i.e., a "power cooker" cost more than a standard stove.

5. Do you need an interior designer or an architect to help you with your plans? You may be able to do this if you have some drafting abilities, or your contractor may have someone on staff who can perform this task. Someone has to have a clear vision as to what is to be implemented, and they must be able to draft it onto paper. If not, a guessing game will go on between you and your contractor, and the results may be a far cry from what you actually wanted.
